With more than fifteen years of translation experience under my belt—five of which as a full-time, in-house translator for one of the largest privately owned translation agencies in the Netherlands—you could say I'm a seasoned translator.
I'm a sworn translator for the Dutch language, with the Dutch equivalent of a master's degree in English linguistics. I currently do translations on a freelance basis, in addition to my fulltime job as a technical writer manager at Oracle.
What do I translate?
I focus on technical translations from English or German into Dutch, which is my native tongue. I’ve done technical translations on a wide variety of subjects, but I’ve come to specialize in the fields of information technology, telecommunications, process control, electrical engineering, electronics, and automotive engineering. Translation subjects have included synchronous electrical motors, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), non-linear junction detectors, IP-based communication systems, cellular phones, wireless networks, point-of-sales (PoS) systems, coastal development, hearing aids, pacemakers, and radiological equipment. (The strangest translation I ever did was probably a text on special shampoo for race horses.)
I can work with a variety of applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe FrameMaker, Quadralay WebWorks, and RoboHelp. HTML-based source texts aren't any problem either.
What don't I translate?
I firmly believe that no serious translator can take on just any document about any subject. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know everything. That’s why, in principle, I don’t translate strictly medical texts (I do do technical texts with a medical angle), legal documents (other than brief certificates and the like), and literary works. I prefer to stick to the types of text I know I can do well, and gladly leave the others to translators who have specialized in these fields.
